How would you like to straighten your teeth without letting other people know you’re doing it? Often, people avoid getting braces because they imagine it will be embarrassing to have others see them with the dental appliances on their teeth. The good news is that there are now invisible braces that allow you to straighten your teeth in a way that is much less obvious to the people around you.
What Are Invisible Braces?
The term “invisible braces” refers to any dental braces that are not visually apparent to others. Of course, they aren’t completely invisible, but others won’t know you’re wearing them unless you tell your secret. There are three distinct types of braces that can be considered invisible. They are:
- Hidden braces
- Clear aligners
- Clear ceramic braces
Your dentist can fit you with hidden braces that move your teeth into perfect alignment without showing on the fronts of your teeth. This is because the braces attach to the backs of your teeth. To fit you with hidden braces, your dentist creates computer images of the backs of your teeth. He or she sends these images in to the lab where your hidden braces are created. You can’t remove them yourself, but your dentist can remove them at any time if a need to have them off arises. Hidden braces can make it somewhat more difficult to chew or to clean your teeth, but the end results can be beautiful teeth.
Clear aligners have become very popular in recent years. After your dentist fits you with these hidden braces, you can remove them any time to brush, floss or eat. For maximum effectiveness, your dentist may recommend you wear them up to 22 hours per day. Your dentist begins by making impressions of your teeth. These impressions are sent to the lab, where lab technicians create a set of aligners for you to wear to gradually move your teeth into place. Usually, you change aligners every 2 weeks, or as advised by your dentist. On follow-up appointments, your dentist will check your progress and make corrections if necessary.
Clear Ceramic Braces
Another option to consider is clear ceramic braces. These braces are similar in structure to traditional metal braces. They have the same type of brackets, archwires and ligaments as traditional braces and move your teeth gradually into position in the same way. It can be difficult to eat and take care of your teeth just as it can with metal braces. However, since they are clear, other people won’t likely notice you’re wearing them. Whether you choose hidden braces, clear aligners or clear ceramic braces, you can get the orthodontic care you need without letting other people know about it until the braces come off and your teeth are straighter and more attractive!
