Dentures for Missing Teeth

Dentures are a removable replacement for missing teeth and their surrounding tissues. Dentures help you with not just the aesthetics but will also help in teeth functions like chewing your food

Procedure

Typically dentures have 4 steps:

The first step involves evaluating the gums and soft tissue to see if they are ready for your new teeth set. Your dentist would do a complete examination and this step would even include x-rays. After a complete assessment, if your dentist feels you still have some excess tissue that might cause problems with the fitting dentures, he/she might recommend certain procedures. However, after the assessment, if your dentist feels you are good to go, the denture-making process is initiated where a cast of your upper and lower gums is made.

The second step involves deciding on the size of the teeth based on the size of your mouth. Your dentist would also try to make sure the alignment between your upper and lower teeth is right for the proper fitting of the dentures. This step is technically called Maximum Mandibular Retention (MMR) step or Center Jaw Relationship (CJR) step. Your dentist will use a loose-fitting denture and a rim of wax to get an approximate position of the teeth to make sure there your dentures fit you right and also there is no interference

The third step involves replacing the loose tray with actual plastic teeth. This set looks and feels exactly like a denture except that the base fits loosely on the gums and the teeth are in wax instead of an actual plastic. Your dentist would assess how the final dentures look and adjust them for size and get the lab to make any final adjustments.

In the final step, your dentist will give you the actual dentures

Risks

Alternatives to dentures

Implant-supported prosthesis. Where implants are placed at strategic positions and a bridge or Denture is made on top of the implants. They can be removable and fixed.

What is the average cost of dentures?

Depending on the material and the quality of the teeth, the price varies

Can I get my teeth pulled and get dentures the same day?

Yes, but the denture needs to be adjusted regularly as the gum and bone heals under the denture at a variable rate and the denture adjustment is made accordingly
